Types Of Hair Grafts And Implant
Hair transplants has evolved slowly from the crude practice of planting unnatural hair to modern transplantation using follicular grafts. For a long time, people have been practicing hair transplantation using larger grafts such as plugs and micro graft. Moving resilient hair from the back of the scalp to the bald areas without proper examining the graft type may look quite unnatural. Due to advance in science and technology, the old ways of hair transplant such as hair plugs and micro have been adopted by hair follicular extraction and transplantation method. Though hair follicular extraction cost twice as much as the cost of standard follicular unit transplantation and much more than the olden methods of hair transplantation, it is found to be the best.
Follicular units: This method of hair transplantation is brought during the first part of 1990s. Since then it has become the standard way of hair transplant. In follicular unit transplant, a small punch is used to extract follicular units from the back of the patient’s scalp where healthy bald resistant hair grows. There are 1,2,3 and sometimes 4 hair follicles that grow together are found in the skin. These hair follicular units are removed and then examined under microscope to ensure that there is no damage in the donor strip. The follicular units are then planted on the patient’s bald areas. One of the major benefits of this method is that there are no scars visible on the patients scalp after the surgery is done.
Micro hair grafts and implant: In micro hair grafts and transplant method, anesthesia is used during the surgery. Most micro hair transplantations are performed on an out patient basis. It is the progressive method of hair transplantation which requires hundred of hair grafts to be implanted on several treatment session. It may space up to several months, which is time consuming. Each micro grafts consist of not more than 1 to 3 hairs. These micro grafts are taken out from the patient’s donor areas, which are located mostly on the back of the scalp. It is planted on the patient’s bald area on scalp and thinning area by taking extra care to ensure better yield.
Hair plug: This method is the oldest hair transplant, which represents an evolutionary step towards the advancement in the field of hair transplantation. In this method, around 10 hairs are planted at a time. This hair plug transplant method could not imitate the natural hairs, as it looks unoriginal.
